We often hear advice like “just go with the flow” or “be in the moment.” These phrases sound beautiful, and they hold truth. But they don’t mean the same thing for everyone.
Being in the present moment doesn’t always mean letting go of all structure. For some, like those with a stable home, a steady income, and a clear life direction, “flow” can mean surrendering more easily because their foundations are already in place. For others, like a solo traveler, an entrepreneur, or someone in a big life transition “flow” has to exist within certain time frames, budget limits, or commitments.
When I’m traveling, for example, I can absolutely move with the rhythm of the journey, but I also need to plan volunteer work in advance, keep an eye on expenses, and think about where my path is heading. If I don’t, the costs add up, and opportunities might slip by. My “present moment” is woven together with a level of foresight, and that’s not less spiritual – it’s just practical.
For everyone this is so personal but I think it is important to sometimes look ahead, include planning and go after what you want. While being flexible and open at the same time.
The masculine & feminine Within
This brings me to another topic that’s often misunderstood: the balance of masculine and feminine energies.
In the current self-development and relationship space, there’s a growing trend encouraging women to “stay in their feminine” (receptive, soft and surrendering) and let men “hold the masculine” (providing, deciding, and leading). While polarity in relationships can be beautiful, there’s also incredible value in cultivating both energies within yourself.
Masculine energy in everyone is about structure, direction, and clarity. Feminine energy in everyone is about flow, receptivity, and intuition. Too much of one can leave you off balance. In my opinion it is best to be in balance and not become passive or dependent with too much feminine or become overworked and controlling, rigid or aggressive with too much masculine.
When I’m traveling solo, I rely on my masculine energy to make plans, set boundaries, and keep myself safe. But I also lean into my feminine energy when I trust my instincts, connect deeply with people, and allow space for magic to happen. Both are necessary.
Presence is personal
Your version of being present will not look like everyone else’s. And that’s okay.
For some, presence is a quiet day at home without thinking of tomorrow. For others, it’s booking the next step of a journey with enough foresight that you can relax once you get there. Presence is less about the absence of planning and more about the absence of anxiety.
So the next time someone tells you to “just go with the flow,” remember:
Flow doesn’t mean drifting without direction.
It means moving with life’s current in a way that supports your reality, your responsibilities, and your dreams!
