rainbow thinking 🌈

We live in a 3D world, where polarity is part of the package. Light and dark. Yes and no. Right and wrong.

And yet, so often, we trap ourselves in black-and-white thinking. It’s either this or that. One or the other. All or nothing. But life? Life is rarely that simple.

I call it Rainbow Thinking: the idea that between the extremes, there’s not just ā€œgrey areaā€ā€¦ there’s a whole rainbow of possibilities.

Just because someone hasn’t replied to your message doesn’t mean they dislike you. Maybe they’re feeling unwell. Maybe they’re busy. Maybe they’re taking a conscious break from the overstimulation of phones.

Just because your art isn’t paying the bills yet doesn’t mean your only option is to abandon it for a corporate job. Maybe you take on a small part-time role. Maybe you do freelance work on the side for extra cash. Maybe you find a way to weave both worlds together until your passion grows strong enough to carry you.

Just because a friend cancels plans last minute doesn’t mean they don’t value your friendship. Maybe they’re protecting their energy, dealing with an unexpected work task, or simply needing rest.

There are thousands of shades between black and white and then there’s a whole ass rainbow.

One of my favorite ways to remind myself of this is to literally bring rainbows into my space:

  • A postcard with a rainbow, stuck to the door.
  • A rainbow magnet on the fridge.
  • A painting of a rainbow in the living room.
  • Set your phone lock screen to a bright rainbow image so every time you check it, you’re reminded of possibility.
  • Wear rainbow-colored socks, a bracelet, or earrings: a little secret reminder you carry with you.
  • Keep a small rainbow sticker on your water bottle or journal where you’ll see it daily.

Small, simple reminders that there’s always more than two options.
Life is colorful. Your choices are endless.

Whenever your mind tries to box you into ā€œeither/or,ā€ look at that rainbow and remember:
There are many colors. Always.
