We live in a 3D world, where polarity is part of the package. Light and dark. Yes and no. Right and wrong.
And yet, so often, we trap ourselves in black-and-white thinking. Itās either this or that. One or the other. All or nothing. But life? Life is rarely that simple.
I call it Rainbow Thinking: the idea that between the extremes, thereās not just āgrey areaā⦠thereās a whole rainbow of possibilities.
Just because someone hasnāt replied to your message doesnāt mean they dislike you. Maybe theyāre feeling unwell. Maybe theyāre busy. Maybe theyāre taking a conscious break from the overstimulation of phones.
Just because your art isnāt paying the bills yet doesnāt mean your only option is to abandon it for a corporate job. Maybe you take on a small part-time role. Maybe you do freelance work on the side for extra cash. Maybe you find a way to weave both worlds together until your passion grows strong enough to carry you.
Just because a friend cancels plans last minute doesnāt mean they donāt value your friendship. Maybe theyāre protecting their energy, dealing with an unexpected work task, or simply needing rest.
There are thousands of shades between black and white and then thereās a whole ass rainbow.
One of my favorite ways to remind myself of this is to literally bring rainbows into my space:
- A postcard with a rainbow, stuck to the door.
- A rainbow magnet on the fridge.
- A painting of a rainbow in the living room.
- Set your phone lock screen to a bright rainbow image so every time you check it, youāre reminded of possibility.
- Wear rainbow-colored socks, a bracelet, or earrings: a little secret reminder you carry with you.
- Keep a small rainbow sticker on your water bottle or journal where youāll see it daily.
Small, simple reminders that thereās always more than two options.
Life is colorful. Your choices are endless.
Whenever your mind tries to box you into āeither/or,ā look at that rainbow and remember:
There are many colors. Always.
