Niyama is the second limb of the eight limbs of ashtanga. Niyama means do. Means self discipline of self regulatory code on a daily basis.
There are 5 different do’s:
1. Saucha – cleanness of body and mind
2. Santocha – contentment and satisfaction
3. Tapas – regular spiritual practices and exercises
4. Svadhyaya – self study
5. Ishvara pranidhana – surrender to the high power
1. Saucha – cleanness of body and mind
Shower, clean the clothes, clean your room and space. Tidy surrounding. Tip top looking. Neat and clean. Clean the mind by positive thinking. Result will be positive. Be clean.
2. Santocha – contentment and satisfaction
Do your best and be satisfied for any result. Acceptance. Good is east to accept, fail is more difficult. But you have no control over the result. Not accept -> leads to exert and depression and your mood will be off.
3. Tapas – regular spiritual practices and exercises.
Tapa means heat and hard labor (inner dignity). We grow this by daily practices. If not, our energy level will be low. Choose the hard option, do not go for the comfort zone. We accept the challenges.
4. Svadhyaya – self study
Go inside your own university, inside you is a great university. Do self study, self observation. Universal wisdom is inside all of us.
5. Ishvara pranidhana – surrender to the high power
Beyond us there is a supreme power. Pay back to the universe. I benefit from yoga practice – I want to share it with others. When you share with others, the universe will teach you.
