go to neutral analogy

While I was in Kopan monastery, we received teachings from Ven Thubten Pema. She is an Australian non who spends usually 3 months a year in Kopan, Nepal to teach.

She told us if you go 120 km per hour on the highway. It is impossible to hit reverse all of a sudden. First you need to switch to neutral – before reverse.

This is the same with our emotions. When you feel anger, you can not just “go back” to being happy. When you feel sadness, you can not just be full of joy again. Therefor the first step is to get back into a neutral emotional state.

Practice some breathing exercises – and go back to feeling calm.
