During a deadheading flight to Entebbe I watched the film called “past lives” (2023) – it is romance drama film based of two friends from Korea and their journey in this life, I added the link to the trailer for you here – this post includes tiny spoilers since I am including film quotes.
I cried during most part of the film, it was so beautiful and inspiring. I want to share with you some quotes & notes I wrote down during the film (yes I sometimes write notes during films, podcasts or while reading I am a Virgo rising hihi).
if you leave something behind, you gain something too
I love this one because it is so true, it is like when you close a door new doors open type of quote. or if you leave certain people, a job, a city you lived, you gain the strength or trust in yourself, or happiness. it is open to interpretation.
inyeon – faith – if two strangers that walk passed each other on the street and the clothes touch it’s because they were together in a past live – when they get married, they had at least 8000 past lives together
Inyeon is a Korean philosophy, it means faith. there are many theories on soulmates and meeting lovers. this philosophy indicates things do not happen by accident. There is a reason you meet people, either to work out lessons together or to grow and love together.
this is where I ended up this is where I’m supposed to be
To accept, to be alright. knowing that certain places and situations happen for a reason. To be calm. to sit with the storm of life.
Below some things her childhood friend told her in the film, he stayed in Korea and she went on to have a life in NYC.
you dream in a language I can’t understand – makes me scared. why? there’s this whole part of you that I don’t understand that I cant access
It is true when someone changes, transforms, grows in whatever way. moving and learning a new language, building a new life in this movie. But it can be done on various scales. It can be scary, it can feel like you have lost this person, that there is a part you will never get to understand.
it’s good you immigrated – Korea is your small for you
I think this can be emotional for people who are living abroad or have more then one country to call home, to miss the place you are from, but to also not miss it because you know what the new place(s) have brought you.
you had to leave because you are you. and I liked you because of you. and you is leaving.
For me it is relatable to the one above, when leaving either a country, a job, a relationship – you always also leave people. But you know and you sense it is for the best even though it hurts. The other who loves you, knows you, and knows it is best for you.
I think there was something in our past lives, otherwise why would we be here now. but in this life we don’t have the inyeon to be that kind of person for each other
Cried again – a lot – here I think it is just beautiful. sometimes saying goodbye to someone you love can be extremely difficult, even though you know it is for the best. The best for yourself. To trust that the people into your life are there for a reason. To trust that the person you have inyeon with it is flowing, it is easy, it just happens. this trust gives peace of mind and rest.
what do you think we will be in the next life? I don’t know. me neither. see you in the next life
Sometimes it is best to say goodbyes, to move forward, to continue your own path. This conversation in the end of the film when they parted ways, is the perfect goodbye (for now). You never know what would/could/might happen in different circumstances, you do know that is something to know for another time. Your souls will find each other again.
인연 are the Korean symbols for inyeon
